Whacha’ May Have Missed Last Week:
…..Last week’s speaker was Tracy Plessinger, Manager of the Altoona Blair County Airport. Tracy provided a little history as he explained that what is now the Altoona Blair County Airport began as a mail drop back in the late 1930’s. The first commercial flight at the airport was conducted in 1949. Today the airport is operated by Southern Airways Express which has two daily flights to Pittsburgh and another two to Baltimore-Washington (BMI), allowing for connecting flights to over 60 non-stop destinations. With fares beginning as low as $29 – along with free parking, flying out of Altoona is both convenient and affordable. Tracy went on to say that with Pittsburgh’s 150 flights per day and BMI’s 350 flights per day, over 100 cities can be connected to daily. Tracy went on to explain that the airport serves three basic types of aviation….General Aviation for private aircraft in the community, Corporate Aviation for local businesses such as Sheetz and the DeGol Organization, and Commercial Aviation. Before answering questions from the members, Tracy noted that there are numerous career paths that aviation can provide. From a current shortage of 22,000 pilots in the U.S. and the continuing need for airline mechanics, job opportunities exist and Tracy is always very willing to discuss these opportunities and the educational needs associated with them by giving him a call at the airport.
Guests of the Day: Remember this is our Spring Roundup in April and May. Bring a guest or call up an Ambuc that hasn’t been to club for a while and hopefully we can grow our membership and increase our attendance. While we had no guests this week….Lisa Drzal won a $50 gift certificate to the Grand Hotel for a guest that she brought several weeks ago.
News of the Week:
…..Paul Dick announced that he found one volunteer but he still needs one more for the AMBUCS Blood Screening Program on Saturday, May 6th. Your help is needed from about 5:30 AM to around 10:00 AM. Why not help out? You’ll still have most of your Saturday left and the club will greatly benefit, since this fundraiser nets us about $12,000 anually!
…..Remember the Regional Conference is only several weeks away. Check out the sign-up sheet that is being circulated for the many activities planned for the last weekend in April. If you have any questions about the conference, ask President Ed or check out the email with the conference activity description that was sent out several times. Sign up today….the conference won’t get any closer than when it’s held here in Altoona.
…..Our guest speaker, Tracy Plessinger, pulled the winning raffle ticket of Rachael Lenhart last week. But Rachael’s luck ran out there…..when she chose the Six of Hearts instead of one of those elusive Jokers. There are now two Jokers in the new deck with three cards gone, so try your luck with the purchase of a raffle ticket this week.
…..Jim Huff promoted and passed around a sign-up sheet for a bus trip to see the Pirates play the Phillies on Saturday May 20th. Check your calendar and enjoy a great game at beautiful PNC Park. It’s even a Bob Walk Chair-Tip Bobblechair giveaway. Game time is 4:05 PM so the bus will leave early that Saturday afternoon. You better hurry….only a few seats left!
