Whacha’ May Have Missed Last Week:

…..Last week’s speaker was Melanie Shildt, Executive Director of the United Way of Blair County. Melanie explained that the United Way was fighting for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in Blair County. Last year, the United Way provided grants for 26 programs in the community, where 84 cents of each dollar raised was directly invested into these programs. The Family Resource Center provided parent education to 78 families and 108 children. Other examples of community support cited by Melanie included the Stuff the Bus program that provided school supplies to over 1,000 students; The Toasty Toddler program that kept over 500 children warm with coats, hats, and gloves; and the Glass Slipper Project that provided prom gowns and tuxedos to over 100 students. Additionally, the United Way organized the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) that completed 180 returns and they coordinated two Day of Caring events that mobilized 268 volunteers working on 33 projects in the community.         Make a difference in Blair County – Give – Advocate – Volunteer!

Guests of the Day:  Brittany Solomon, Development Director of the United Way of Blair County, guest of Alex Seltzer.

News of the Week:

…..WOW, another winner! Just one drawing after President Ed Garlena wiped us out, Bill Reintgen drew the sought after Joker from a new deck. Since the club starts each new game off with $50, Bill claimed a pot of $72.50. Not a bad payout for Bill just for showing up at club, buying a raffle ticket, having lunch, listening to an interesting speaker and enjoying the company of his fellow Ambucs.

…..The AMBUCS Blood Screening Program is set for Saturday, May 6th.  This year’s screening will again be held at the Park Hills Golf Club, with appointments available from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM. The screening, besides being a community service, is a major fundraiser for the club. A typical year will net the club around $12,000. A mailing, describing this year’s screenings, was sent out to 824 people who have used our screenings in the past.                                                                                           Another mailing to 100 local doctors is also being planned. Each mailing will include several posters and 20 screening brochures for the doctors to promote the event. Since 2,000 additional brochures will need printed for this mailing to doctors, the club is asking for any member’s business that could donate brochure printing. The brochures are two-sided on 8 ½” x 11” paper and can be printed either in color or black and white. The brochures will be needed by the end of the week. If you are able to assist with this printing, please contact Paul Dick.

…..Spring Roundup, an annual membership drive, is scheduled for April, May and June. This year’s goal is to bring in 8 new members and have 5 inactive members become active again. Any new member brought in during the Roundup will have the $15 membership fee waived and be given a $50 credit on their first quarter dues. Additionally, four $50 cash prize drawings will be held for members who bring in a new member and/or reactivate one through drawings at the end of the Roundup. Additionally, $50 Altoona Grand Hotel gift certificates will be drawn bi-weekly, thanks to Rachael Lenhart!  An informational sheet for the Roundup was attached to this week’s bulletin email. Membership Chairman, Alex Seltzer, will have additional information at club this week.

…..Jim Huff reminded us that the Regional Conference is right around the corner. A sign-up sheet is being circulated for the many activities planned for the last weekend in April. The conference won’t get any closer than when it’s held here in Altoona.

…..Jim Huff also recently announced that he is planning another bus trip to see the Pirates play the Phillies on Saturday May 20th. A sign-up sheet will be circulated soon.

In Closing:  With heartfelt apologies to both Ken Decker and President Ed Garlena….
